Biography
3/4 Time Faculty, Communication Studies
Ph.D. candidate, Duquesne University
Basak M. Guven joined the department in Fall 2024. With nearly two decades of experience in higher education, including seven years of teaching in the United States, her teaching philosophy is grounded in the idea of life as a serendipitous journey—one that broadens our perspectives and helps us navigate our existence. She believes that every juncture in this journey, including the classroom, calls for attentiveness, reflection, and active engagement.
Her research explores the intersection of communication ethics and human rights, with a focus on how individuals can live and communicate ethically in a world of difference. Her work particularly addresses the experiences of the self, displaced individuals, immigration, and existential homelessness.
A lover of both the simple and the complex, she finds balance in nature, whether by taking walks or immersing herself in great books to refresh her mind and body. With a deep appreciation for community, Basak cherishes time with family and friends, often hosting lively gatherings where ideas flow as freely as conversation. Her home reflects her belief that connection and creativity thrive in shared spaces.
