Scholarships and Funds

The Rowan Foundations awards about $2 million in scholarships to Rowan University students each year on the basis of academic excellence, financial need, and participation in on-campus and off-campus activities. Students apply for these scholarships through Scholarship Universe; the deadline to apply is usually February 28, and recipients are selected by committees. Many of the scholarships listed below--and many many more scholarships that aren't listed here, including external scholarships--are awarded through Scholarship Universe, so full-time students looking for financial assistance should definitely to apply to Scholarship Universe each year!

How to Apply

University scholarships are available to students through Scholarship Universe. The University Scholarship Committee awards scholarships to Rowan University Students on the basis of academic excellence, financial need, and participation in on-campus and off-campus activities.

Scholarships Open to All Majors

Dr. Kenneth Baird Charlesworth Scholarship

This scholarship offers about $3700 to help a Rowan student from any major study abroad for Fall and/or Spring. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Applications will be submitted to Scholarship Universe by their deadline.

Paul Tong Memorial Scholarship for Excellence in the Humanities

Named in honor of former World Religions professor, Paul Tong. Apply Here

Study Abroad Scholarships

One scholarship of about $1800 for a student from any college or major with at least a 3.4 GPA who is studying abroad for at least a semester, and another scholarship of about $3900 for a student interested in studying abroad in Scotland with at least a 3.0 GPA. Applications will be submitted to Scholarship Universe by their deadline.

Africana Studies

American Federation of Teachers

This account funds 4 scholarships. Only 2 are designated for CHSS students. Applications will be submitted to Scholarship Universe, and are typically due February 28. Recipients will be selected by a university committee.

1- Martin Luther King Scholarship: awarded to an EOF, MAP, or Flack Mentoring Program student. Students enrolled in the Africana Studies major or Africana Studies Concentration are also eligible.

2- Paul Tong Scholarship: awarded to a Humanities major

Asian Studies

Asian Studies Scholarship
Scholarship awards academic excellence in Asian Studies. GPA requirement of 3.2. Recipient chosen by Scholarship Committee of the Association of Asian Professionals.

Communication Studies

Piazza Stubbs Family Scholarship

Scholarship awarded to a permanent resident of the United States with a 3.25 GPA.
First preference: Education major.
Second preference: Communication major
The recipient is selected by the University Senate Committee.

Economics

Amelia & Peter Kressler Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to a junior or senior with a 3.0 GPA. 1st preference- Economics major. 2nd preference- Any Liberal arts major. Students apply through Scholarship Universe by their deadline.

Dr. Bela Mukhoti Scholarship in Economics
Scholarship recognizes a full time upper-class student studying Economics with a 3.0 GPA. First preference to research interns within the South Jersey Research Institute for Economics and Politics. Recipient selected by Political Science & Economics department.

PROS Outstanding Scholar Scholarship
Scholarship recognizes a student who displays a commitment to academic excellence and also leadership within the PROS Program. Awarded to an upper-class student with a 3.0 GPA. Preferences: Rohrer College of Business, College of Engineering, Economics or Mathematics programs. Applications will be submitted to Scholarship Universe by their deadline.

English

Frank and Helen Richie Scholarship
Recipient majors in English/Education with a 3.0 GPA. Scholarship awarded to a junior (entering senior year) with priority given to a South Jersey resident. Students apply through Scholarship Universe by their deadline.

John Price English/History Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to an English or History major; must have 3.2 GPA; must be Junior, Senior, or Graduate student with demonstrated financial need. Students apply through Scholarship Universe by their deadline.

John Roch Award

Scholarship to honor the memory of John Roch, former chair of the Department of English. Recipient should be a senior English major with a high or the highest GPA of the senior English class. Student must be a valued and engaged member of the community and a good citizen of the English department. Recipient is selected by the English Department.

Maxine A. Hartley & Richard J. Johnson Scholarship
To recognize the academic efforts of an English major who is a single parent or a student with financial need. Scholarship is renewable as long as student meets criteria. Selected by members of the English Department.

Nathan R. Carb Fund
This scholarship honors the contributions of Dr. Nathan R. Carb by awarding a scholarship to an English major with at least a 3.5 GPA who intends to enroll in a graduate program. There is one scholarship available, selected by members of the English Department.

Richard Mitchell Memorial Scholarship
The purpose of this award is to recognize an English major who best exemplifies Dr. Mitchell's daring, audacity, originality and enthusiasm. This award is not based on GPA but recognizes outstanding intellectual ability distinguished by creative thinking. Good departmental citizenship is another factor in determining the award recipient. There is one award given annually selected by the English Department.

Rose Glassberg Student Teaching in English Scholarship
This scholarship recognizes the achievements of an English Education major who will be student teaching during the next semester. Must have a 3.0 GPA in the major. Students apply through Scholarship Universe by their deadline.

History

Edward and Stella Michals Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to undergraduate History majors with a 3.0 GPA. Students apply through Scholarship Universe by their deadline.

Gary Hunter Scholarship

This scholarship acknowledges the contributions of Dr. Gary Hunter, former chair of the History Department, to the University. The recipient must be a rising senior History major with a 3.0 cumulative GPA. They must also be matriculated, enrolled full-time and in good standing with the University. Students apply through Scholarship Universe by their deadline.

Governors Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to an academically talented junior Political Science, Law/Justice or History student with at least a 3.0 GPA. Applications will be submitted to Scholarship Universe by their deadline.

John Price English/History Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to an English or History major; must have 3.2 GPA; must be Junior, Senior, or Graduate student with demonstrated financial need. Students apply through Scholarship Universe by their deadline.

Lee Kress Scholarship

Scholarship awared to an outstanding history graduate student. For more information, contact the coordinator of the History graduate program.

Marius Livingston History Scholarship

This scholarship awarded on basis of academic merit to a History major with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Students apply through Scholarship Universe by their deadline.

Nicholas Yovnello Scholarship
Scholarship honors the memory of Nick Yovnello. Awarded to a junior or senior with a 3.0 GPA and financial need. Preference to: 1-History, Political Science or Education majors. 2-Students who have worked at Campbell Library. 3- Students with an immediate family member who is a member of a union. Students apply through Scholarship Universe by their deadline.

Vanguard Claims Administration Endowed Scholarship in History

New Endowment. Scholarship awarded to a full-time undergraduate History major with demonstrated financial need. Recipient is selected by the History Department.

Journalism

Anne Marie Bottazzi Scholarship for Excellence in Academics and Leadership

Scholarship awarded to a junior Public Relations, Writing Arts or Journalism major. Recipient must have a GPA (as of the end of the Spring, junior year semester and the Fall senior year semester) of 3.7 in their major and 3.5 overall. The recipient must demonstrate campus leadership in student clubs and organizations, with a preference for SGA, PRSSA and SUP. The recipients are selected by the CCCA committee.

Trymaine Lee Diversity in Media Scholarship

Scholarship awarded to a Journalism major with demonstrated financial need. Recipient must possess a 3.0 GPA and reside in Camden County. First preference will be given to first-generation college students participating in a Rowan University diversity initiative program. Must submit a 500-1000-word essay
describing overcoming diversity in his/her life, as well as the importance of diversity in media coverage of marginalized communities. The recipient is selected by the Journalism department.

Law & Justice Studies

Dr. Stanley B. Yeldell Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to an upper-class Law & Justice major who exemplifies academic excellence, leadership potential and community service. Recipient is selected by the Law & Justice department committee.

Gwendolyn Ashford Faison Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to an Education, Law/Justice or Political Science major. Recipient must reside in Camden, have documented community service and a 2.5 GPA. Applications will be submitted to Scholarship Universe by their deadline.

Philosophy & World Religion

The Philosophy and World Religions Department honors students each year with a variety of awards and scholarships. The department also has funding available to assist with student conference presentations, career development, and study abroad.

Dianne Ashton Endowed Scholarship in Religion Studies

Scholarship awarded to a College of Humanities and Social Sciences student who has successfully completed at least four classes in Religion offered by the Department of Philosophy and World Religions. Students apply through Scholarship Universe by their deadline.

Entrance Scholarships (2 awards each year)

These scholarships ($1,000/year renewable for 4 years) are for incoming first-year students who declare a major in either Philosophy or World Religions. Funded by the Philosophy and World Religions Department.

David Clowney Scholarship for Excellence in Philosophy - Apply Here

This scholarship ($2,000-$2,500) is for an outstanding Junior Philosophy major. Funded by the Philosophy and World Religions Department

Charles Wei-Hsun Fu Memorial Scholarship in World Philosophy and Religion

This scholarship (up to $1000) was established in memory of professor Charles Wei-Hsun Fu of Temple University. It supports the development of the academic study of philosophy and religion studies in global context and perspective. There can be multiple recipients.

Professional Development Funding: (Apply here)

Departmental funds to support student professional development, such as conference attendance, conference presentations, professional attire, membership fees, training, language programs, summer institute attendance, etc. Amounts can vary

Paul Tong Memorial Scholarship for Excellence in the Humanities

Political Science

Becker Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to a Political Science major who excels academically who will be attending graduate or law school. 1st preference: Student accepted into a PhD program with intention of pursuing a specialization in Constitutional Law. 2nd preference: student accepted into an ABA accredited law school. 3rd preference: student accepted into a PhD program in Political Science, regardless of specialization. Selection by Political Science Chair.

Dr. Bruce Caswell
Scholarship awarded to students who accept an unpaid internship in politics and/or students pursuing activities related to his/her Political Science major. Selection determined by the Director of the Institute for Public Policy & Citizenship. Application information may be found here.

George Jackson Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to a student with financial need. First preference is given to a Political Science major. Students apply through Scholarship Universe by their deadline.

James P. Fox Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to students who accept an unpaid internship and are Pell eligible. The recipients shall reflect a passion for politics and aspire to pursue a political career like the late Jamie Fox. Student must have at least a 2.5 GPA. Second preference is a student with demonstrated financial need. Recipients are selected by the Director of RIPPAC. Application information may be found here.

Rick Rosenberg, Jr. Memorial Scholarship
Recipient shall reflect the passion for new Jersey politics and aspire to pursue a future political career like the late Rick Rosenberg, Jr, the Republican political operative. Awarded to students who accept an unpaid internship and/or to students pursuing activities related to his/her Political Science major at the discretion of the Director of the Institute for Public Policy & Citizenship. Anne Marie Bottazzi Scholarship for Excellence in Academics and Leadership

Radio, Television, & Film

Diana King Memorial Scholarship

Scholarship awarded to rising juniors, seniors or graduate students who are talented artists and storytellers with a passion and talent for the cinematic, television and media arts. Students must demonstrate financial need. The recipients are selected by the Dean of CCCA.

Diana King Master of Arts in Television

Scholarship awarded to MA in Television Studies students. Award selection is based on financial need and/or merit. The student must be enrolled in at least 6 credits each semester and maintain a 3.0 GPA. Scholarship can be extended up to two academic years. Up to $100,000is available for the first cohort of students. The recipients are selected by the chair of RTF in consultation with the Dean.

Cindy A. Nanny Memorial Scholarship

Scholarship awarded to a senior Radio/TV/Film major with a 3.0 GPA. The recipient is selected by the RTF Committee.

Sports Communication & Media

Daniel E. Baker Scholarship

Scholarship awarded to a rising junior or senior Sports Communication and Media student with a 3.0 GPA and an interest in the sports industry. Student must be enrolled full-time and be in good standing with the University.

World Languages

Women's & Gender Studies

Thelma Rebecca Dyer Caswell and Helen Criden Cohen Scholarship
Recipients must be enrolled in either the Women’s and Gender Studies Program or a Women’s and Gender Studies course. Preference to first-generation college attendee who also has a single parent. If no qualified student meets this preference, the scholarship can be awarded to a Women’s and Gender Studies student. Selected by Women and Gender Studies Advisory Board.

Writing Arts

The Stephanie George Lenchinsky and William Lenchinsky Endowed Scholarship Fund

Scholarship will first be awarded in the 2023-24 academic year. Scholarship awarded to students with the most demonstrated financial need who are enrolled in a Writing Arts program with a dual major in Education. The recipients will be chosen by the Writing Arts Committee.

Antoinette Libro Scholarship for Excellence in Writing Arts

Scholarship awarded to a Master of Arts in Writing student with at least a 3.5 GPA. Recipient should have earned a B.A. in Writing Arts or English. The recipient is selected by the Graduate Program Advisor and the Committee.

Anne Marie Bottazzi Scholarship for Excellence in Academics and Leadership

Myra Schiffmann-Bunya Sandler Memorial Scholarship

Scholarship awarded to Graduate students when entering their work into writing contests and/or assist with travel expenses to attend professional development conferences and opportunities. The recipients are chosen by the Writing Arts department.

Edelman Scholars

The Edelman Scholars program is designed to transform the lives of students who otherwise may not attend or graduate from college. The program provides support services, community-building, and experiential learning opportunities to foster lifelong success for majors within the Ric Edelman College of Communication & Creative Arts.

Unlike any other scholarship in the United States, the Edelman Scholars program also provides a $17,000 award upon timely graduation from Edelman CCCA to help launch students into post-graduate life.

As an Edelman Scholar you will receive:

Substantial scholarship aid toward the full cost of attendance (tuition, books, fees, board/meals)
Year-round, on-campus housing
Wrap-around support via Rowan’s student support services

The August Bagin - Richard Ambacher, Sr. Memorial Scholarships

This $1500 scholarship is awarded to one incoming freshman in the Ric Edelman College of Communication and Creative Arts. Eligible students must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and will be invited to submit a 250-300 word essay to be considered for this award.

The David Cromie Communication Scholarship

This scholarship honors the memory of David Cromie, former professor and chair of the College of Communication. A scholarship of $650 per year is awarded to one incoming freshman or transfer student in the Ric Edelman College of Communication and Creative Arts. Eligible students must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and will be invited to submit a 250-300 word essay to be considered for this award.

Scholarship awarded to an upper-class College of Communication student who demostrates leadership and volunteerism within their major, the University and their communitiy. Recipient should possess a 3.0 GPA. Please note this account funds two scholarships, only one of which is CCCA. The recipient is selected by the University Senate Committee.

Flying First Endowed Scholarship

Scholarship awarded to student enrolled in the College of Communication & Creative Arts who are first-generation students with demonstrated financial need. The recipient is selected by Penny McPherson Myers.

Marie Ann (Wagner) Gemmell Memorial Scholarship

Scholarship created in memory of Marie (Wagner) Gemmell ’08. Recipient will be a College of Communication & Creative Arts upper-classman with a minimum 2.5 GPA. Awardee must also be a member of PROS, Greek Life or SGA. Please note this account funds four scholarships, only one of which is a CCCA scholarship. The recipient is selected by the University Senate Committee.

South Jersey Gas Scholarship

Scholarship awarded to Business or Communication majors who reside in the South Jersey Gas service area. The recipients are selected by the University Committee.
