A Balanced Foundation in Science and Art

From the first year, students build their knowledge of biology, anatomy, physiology, and genetics, paired with courses in drawing, design, and digital visualization. This balance ensures students understand the scientific concepts they will illustrate while cultivating the technical and artistic ability to communicate them clearly and creatively.

Hands-On Studio Experiences

Through sequential studio courses, students learn observational drawing, digital illustration, 3D modeling, animation, and interactive media design. Specialized classes such as Biomedical Illustration, 3D Animation for Media and Industry, and Advanced Problems in Biomedical Visualization challenge students to translate complex medical and scientific information into accurate, engaging visuals.

Advanced Tools & Emerging Technologies

Rowan’s program integrates industry-standard software and emerging pipelines, including Autodesk, Adobe Creative Suite, Unity, Unreal, and generative AI tools. Students also gain experience designing for virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and immersive simulation environments, preparing them for the evolving landscape of biomedical communication.

Elective Flexibility & Interdisciplinary Learning

Students customize their education with a broad selection of electives across Rowan’s colleges. Options include sculpture, photography, graphic design, information visualization, engineering, and advanced biological sciences. This flexibility encourages students to pursue individual interests and collaborate across disciplines.

Professional Preparation

The curriculum culminates in a senior thesis project, portfolio development, and professional practices course. These experiences prepare graduates to showcase their work, navigate professional opportunities, and step confidently into careers in biomedical illustration, animation, interactive media, UX design, scientific communication, and beyond.

Program Highlights

  • Integrated coursework in biological sciences and studio art.

  • Progressive training in 2D and 3D visualization, commercial animation, and interactive immersive design.

  • Access to cutting-edge technologies in VR, AR, and generative AI.

  • Interdisciplinary electives with opportunities to study across engineering, science, and health professions.

  • A capstone thesis and portfolio that launches students into professional practice.

At Rowan, the curriculum is designed not only to meet the highest standards of scientific accuracy and visual communication but also to embrace innovation—ensuring graduates are prepared to lead in a rapidly changing field.
