Minor in Film & Television Studies

The Minor in Film and Television Studies is an 18-credit (6 course) program designed for students looking to expand their knowledge of these media forms to complement their major field of studies. Our minor offers students critical approaches to the study of film and television in media aesthetics, history, and theory. Students will also build skills in research, writing, and analysis that can be applied to a range of scholarly and professional contexts.

Curriculum

Students begin with an introductory course in the analysis of media, critical thinking, and writing (RTF 03275 Introduction to Media Aesthetics). Students will then choose courses from two cores: first, from a series of courses in Film & TV History, which includes background on the development of film and television as art forms, industries, and critical aspects of media culture in both US and global contexts; and, second, from a Media, Culture, and Identity core, which includes courses analyzing how media both shapes and is shaped by the broader culture. Finally, students may customize and deepen their knowledge of specific areas of interest with two program electives. These will allow you to pursue further study in film and TV history or media and culture, or to focus on genres (e.g. Film Noir, Reality TV), modes (documentary, animation), issues of authorship (e.g. film directors, TV auteurs), specific historical topics (e.g. censorship, the Hollywood studio system), among other topics.

Students must take at least two of the following media history courses. Focus on just film, just TV, the origins of each, or mix and match as your interests or schedule allow:
