De-Radicalization and Democracy (2025-2026)
The Rowan Center for the Study of the Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights is excited to announce a new interview series, one that delves into the latest advancements in critical fields, featuring candid conversations with leading scholars and researchers. It provides a platform for exploring new and emerging research in Holocaust and genocide studies, the dynamics of political extremism, crucial public health initiatives, and the evolving landscape of human rights. Join us as we engage with the minds shaping our understanding of history’s most profound lessons and contemporary global challenges.
For the 2025-2026 academic year, the series will center on the timely theme of “De-Radicalization and Democracy.” Given the global rise in political extremism, the spread of disinformation, and the pressures on democratic systems, this year’s focus will delve into understanding the roots of radicalization, the strategies for de-radicalization, and protecting and strengthening democracy. By engaging with leading scholars, practitioners, and policymakers, the “De-Radicalization and Democracy” theme will offer critical insights into one of the most pressing issues of our time, fostering a deeper understanding of how to safeguard democratic principles and promote peaceful, pluralistic societies.
Jessica Sciarone
Jessica Sciarone is a PhD candidate in political science at the University of Washington, Seattle. Her research investigates how extremist narratives move from fringe spaces to mainstream political and cultural discourse, with a focus on far-right extremism, conspiratorial thinking, and gendered dynamics. Originally from the Netherlands, she has worked in both academic and non-profit contexts. Before her PhD, she was a researcher at Leiden University, where she studied risk perception following terrorist attacks. She has also worked in the non-profit sector in Seattle. Her work has been published in Terrorism and Political Violence and the Journal for Deradicalization. She holds degrees in Political Science (BSc and MA), Intelligence and International Security (MA) and Crisis and Security Management (MSc).
