Biography

Baritone Steven Condy is celebrated for his vivid portrayals across a wide repertoire, from the great comic buffo roles to commanding dramatic villains, admired equally for his robust, nuanced vocalism, instinctive comedic timing, and powerful dramatic presence. The Washington Times praised his “comic timing of John Candy and a voice that remains flexible, rich and true through every intricacy,” while Anthony Tomassini of The New York Times awarded him “the prize for the most naturally clear diction of the cast.”

Highlights of Mr. Condy’s career include appearances with The Metropolitan Opera in productions of Gianni Schicchi and La bohème. Most recently, he delivered a chilling portrayal of Baron Scarpia in Puccini’s Tosca with OperaDelaware (in co-production with Opera Baltimore), earning acclaim for his commanding stage presence and menacing interpretation. 

He is particularly renowned for his interpretation of Dr. Bartolo in Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia, a role he has performed over 100 times with leading companies including Houston Grand Opera, San Francisco Opera, Washington National Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, Portland Opera, Madison Opera, Virginia Opera, Sarasota Opera, and Opera Carolina (house debut), among many others. The Boston Music Intelligencer declared his Bartolo “most delightfully surprising and truly brilliant…the agility of his voice…combined with his clumsily agile physicality…stole the show.”

Verdi’s Falstaff is another signature role, performed to critical acclaim with Utah Opera, Indianapolis Opera, Chautauqua Opera, Kentucky Opera, Opera San José, and Opera Delaware. 

As a concert soloist, Mr. Condy has earned acclaim in orchestral and oratorio repertoire, including his Carnegie Hall debut in Handel’s Messiah with the MasterWork Chorus and Orchestra; soloist in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with both the Lincoln Symphony and Asheville Symphony; Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast; and gala performances with the Indianapolis Symphony, Opéra de Montréal, and Orquesta Sinfónica Sinaloa de las Artes.

As a teacher, Mr. Condy joined the faculty of Rowan University in 2026 after serving as Affiliate Artist in Voice and Director of Opera Theater at Cairn University. He has given masterclasses at Carson-Neumann University, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Portland Opera, St. Andrew’s Conservatory of Music (Sanford, FL) and many others. Mr. Condy and his wife, soprano Robin Leigh Massie, are also the Directors of the Vocal Intensive Study Program at the Masterworks Summer Music Festival in Lynchburg, VA. He holds a BM in Music Education (voice and trombone) from University of Hartford and a MM in Voice/Opera Performance from Yale University.
