Rowan Offers Flexible Degree Pathways
Students begin in the BA in Art program then may transition into the BFA in Studio Art by the second semester of sophomore year for a more intensive studio study. They may also choose to expand their credentials with New Jersey endorsements such as:
- Reading
- Teacher of Students with Disabilities (TOSD)
These options allow students to broaden their expertise and increase their marketability in the field.
Our Advisors in the Department of Art and the College of Education work closely with students to:
- Plan degree pathways
- Track program benchmarks
- Prepare for licensure requirements
- Navigate field placements and professional year expectations
This collaborative advising model ensures students stay on track and feel supported throughout their academic journey.
Fieldwork Offers on the Job Training
Rowan’s Art Education program is built around meaningful, hands-on teaching experiences that begin early and grow progressively in area schools.
Sophomore Year
- Part-time placements in art classroom settings
- Observation and introductory co-teaching responsibilities
Junior Year
- Increased instructional duties in art classroom settings
- Collaboration with experienced cooperating teachers
Senior Year (Professional Year)
- Full-time placement in a partner school
- Immersive teaching experience that prepares students for their first year in the classroom
On-campus coursework complements these placements by connecting practice with historical, theoretical, and contemporary approaches to visual art education.
Saturday Morning Art (smART) Program
The smART Program is a signature Rowan experience that allows Art Education majors to become the “art teacher” in a real classroom setting during their sophomore year.
Students gain experience by:
- Designing and teaching original art lessons
- Managing a classroom environment
- Working with children, grades K-8 from surrounding communities
smART also extends to local high schools, offering valuable experience in secondary-level teaching. All smART activities are coordinated and supervised by Rowan Art Education.
