Curriculum
Master of Translational Orthopedic Device Engineering
The Master of Translational Orthopedic Device Engineering curriculum is structured as a one-year, two-semester program comprising 30 credit hours that systematically integrates fundamental engineering principles, translational research methods, and clinical applications. The foundational courses establish a rigorous framework by presenting the mechanics of musculoskeletal tissues, biomaterials selection and characterization, and device design methodologies within a translational context.
In the second semester, the curriculum advances to clinical applications of orthopedic devices and orthopedic device technology transfer. Elective offerings enable students to tailor their expertise to specific domains, such as computational biomechanics, advanced biomaterials, or regulatory science, ensuring that graduates possess both the breadth and depth required to innovate within multidisciplinary orthopedic teams.
A hallmark of the MTODE curriculum is its emphasis on experiential learning through state-of-the-art virtual reality (VR) platforms and clinical immersion. Utilizing the PrecisionOS VR environment, students engage in high-fidelity simulations of orthopedic procedures, ranging from fracture fixation techniques to arthroplasty workflows, enabling real-time manipulation of virtual instruments and three-dimensional anatomical models. Concurrently, optional surgical shadowing in Virtua Health System’s operative suites provides in-person exposure, allowing students to observe live surgeries, interact with multidisciplinary surgical teams, and contextualize their virtual training within actual clinical workflows.
Delivered online via live interactive lectures and synchronous modules, the curriculum accommodates working professionals and remote learners, while the one- to two-day optional on-site visits facilitate essential hands-on experiences without compromising the convenience of distance education.
